2016 G Malik Lue-Mitchell plans to announce his college decision, which will be between Hawaii and Western Kentucky, sometime at the end of this month. Lue-Mitchell attends Evelyn Mack High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lue-Mitchell has offers from Hawaii, North Carolina Central, and Western Kentucky, and has decided he will be choosing from either Hawaii and Western Kentucky. He still has interest from Buffalo and UAB, but no offer has been made by either school.
Lue-Mitchell has surely made a name for himself, as he posted 26 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds against the prestigious high school basketball team, 22 Feet Academy (SC), he told us. Against Huntingdon Prep (WV), where Michigan State signee Miles Bridges attends high school school, Lue-Mitchell marked his name on the stat sheet with 9 points and 13 assists. Lue-Mitchell averaged 13.8 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 4.0 APG and 2.0 SPG while on Prep Circuit, he told us.
Lue-Mitchell told WBKO that Western Kentucky head coach Rick Stansbury "says that I can score the ball pretty good and that I can play point guard and shooting guard – that's what he likes about me." Lue-Mitchell then talked about himself, saying "I can shoot the ball, dribble and make plays for others. That's how I see myself – and can play defense. I bring a good tempo to the game."
Western Kentucky guard Aaron Cosby (13.7 PPG) will be graduating next year, and guard Fredrick Edmond (12.2 PPG) is leaving the program as well. This leaves the Hilltoppers with only three returning guards next year, though WKU has two incoming freshman next season who are point guards, Damari Parris, a friend of Lue-Mitchell's, being one of them.
Eran Ganot, the head coach for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, told Lue-Mitchell that he is in a good situation in terms of his playing time. Hawaii is rather deep at the guard position, but Lue-Mitchell should fit into the rotation well.
Hawaii is definitely far from Lue-Mitchell's home in Pickering, Ontario. I asked Lue-Mitchell how much this affects his decision, and he responded saying, "[It does] not really [affect my decision]. Sacrifices are what I've been doing my whole life, and that is one thing I'd have to do for me to try and get to my goal." Lue-Mitchell has been attending school in North Carolina, which is far from Pickering, so Lue-Mitchell has experience being away from home.
Lue-Mitchell told me playing time does affect his decision, though it appears that he will be getting some playing time wherever he decides to play collegiate basketball. He also added that Hawaii's tournament run does not make a major impact in his decision.
Lue-Mitchell could not give me a specific decision day, but he told me he will announce "at the end of this month".
