Earlier this week, Malik Newman, a former Mississippi State guard, announced he would transfer from the school. Newman was a former 5-star recruit from Jackson, Mississippi. Newman averaged 11.3 PPG, 2.8 PRG and 2.2 APG last season as a Bulldog. According to The Clarion-Ledger, Arizona, Arizona State, Butler, Cal State Nothridge, Colorado State, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Kansas, Louisiana-Lafayette, Miami, North Carolina State, Oregon, Purdue, TCU, Vanderbilt, and Western Kentucky have all expressed interest in Newman. Mississippi State has not restricted Newman to any schools. Newman is required to sit one year before playing again.
It is early in his recruiting process, so there is no definite frontrunner at this point. However, Kansas was very much involved in his recruitment, and insider sources have told me Kansas is a legit contender. One source told me that there was buzz about Newman visiting Kansas this weekend or next weekend. One source said that Kansas is probably the best fit for Newman, but the source asked the question "Is Kansas that interested in Newman?" Out of the many schools that have expressed interest in Newman thus far, Kansas seems most likely to land him, though that is subject to change as he is not deep in the process, one source says.
