UNLV Struggling This Offseason
It is worst case scenario right now for the Runnin' Rebels. The offseason has just begun, and they already look like a much worse team than they were last season. They finished 18-15 and ended 8-10 in the Mountain West Conference, which is not very good and will not be any better next season. We will analyze who the incoming freshman are, and what the current players are up to.
2016 Recruiting Class:
4* PG Jaylen Fisher
4* SF Justin Jackson
3* SF Carlos Johnson*
* - signed LOI
Ok - the recruiting class looks pretty good. The class is ranked #21 in the nation and #1 in the Mountain West Conference. Both 4-star recruits in PG Jaylen Fisher and SF Justin Jackson are very talented players who are expected to play at an elite level in college. Fisher is very athletic and can run as fast as anyone in the class, making him great in transition. He is known for his 3 point shooting. Jackson, at 6'8", plays bigger than he is. He is a great rebounder and shot blocker, he just needs to improve in the post. Johnson can do it all inside the three point arc. He is a great mid range shooter, can rebound well and can finish at the rim. The class looks pretty good, but don't expect any of them to play incredibly well as freshmen. When they become upperclassmen, it will be a different story.
Transfers:
Sophomore F Dwayne Morgan
Sophomore C Goodluck Okonoboh
Sophomore G Jordan Cornish
Entering Draft:
Sophomore G Patrick McCaw
Freshman F Derrick Jones Jr.**
Freshman C Stephen Zimmerman Jr.**
** - do not plan on hiring an agent
McCaw, Jones Jr, and Zimmerman Jr. were arguably the three best players on this team. To have all of them leave, especially as young as they are, is a crushing blow to UNLV and Chris Beard. Patrick McCaw had a very good season (14.7 PPG 5.1 RPG 3.9 APG, 2.5 SPG). He is projected to be in the late second round at best. Jones averaged 11.5 PPG and 4.5 RPG. Jones is on the same boat as McCaw, except there Jones to be drafted than McCaw, who has a good chance to go undrafted. Zimmerman was a top-15 prospect out of high school and put up 10.5 PPG, 8.7 RPG and 2.0 BPG. Zimmerman is expected to go in the late first round, and at worst in the early second round.
Graduating:
Senior G Jerome Seagears
Senior G Barry Cheaney
A total of eight players will be leaving the team for UNLV.
